Many workplace studies show a direct link between productivity and employee well-being. A fit and happy workforce will reap benefits to an employer through enhanced performance, increased morale, reduced absenteeism and attrition as well as lower health care costs.

  The question that often needs to be asked is: why are these strategies needed? Is the work situation causing stress? Do employees have time to reassess their working situations, their health mentally and physically so that illness and stress can be avoided? Each business and employee base is unique and true leadership can often need a helping hand to develop the right strategies and work practices that support a values based ethos that supports the well-being of its workforce.

Moore Associates Hampshire Limited, mahl, offers such a service to businesses of all sizes across the South of England and imaginestyle has been fortunate to work in association with them on their Presenting Yourself Positively At Work workshop, part of the Generating Energy and Well Being program. In conjunction with Work and Well-Being Ltd, mahl has developed a unique approach to employee well-being that is research-based focused on allowing leaders to identify areas of difficulty and to deal with them effectively with workable approaches suited to their specific needs.

Before I go any further on this one, it's struck me that perhaps not everyone knows who Pantone are and what does it matter what they say about colour? Let me humbly educate. Pantone are considered to be the global authority on colour and provide the professional colour standards for todays design industries. In addition to regularly announcing their chosen Colour of the Year, they also report the top trend colours for the fashion industry, typically released to coincide with major international fashion events like New York Fashion Week.

So if the fashion dons are taking notice, we might as well keep up.

Personally, I love Turquoise but I'm biased to all colours (part of my confusion in life is to choose a favourite...). Turquoise is a blue-green hue with the name taken from the naturally occurring gemstone representing Sagittarius (if you're into astrology).

In one of my first blogs I touched on the psychology of colour and how it has a very definite effect on us. Turquoise and shades of blue, green and aqua are associated with positivity and calm, spiritual in nature offering, protection and sophistication.

“In many cultures, Turquoise occupies a very special position in the world of color,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “It is believed to be a protective talisman, a color of deep compassion and healing, and a color of faith and truth, inspired by water and sky. Through years of color word-association studies, we also find that Turquoise represents an escape to many – taking them to a tropical paradise that is pleasant and inviting, even if only a fantasy.”

Being true to the mineral, Turquoise shades range from almost sky blue to deep greenish blues so able to able to cover the the spectrum colour directions from Deep to Muted. The lighter shades provide a feminine feel through to Warm teals, while the more blue shades will work well for Cools. if you're primary colour direction is a Bright then this particular turquoise would work well and for those with more Muted tones they may prefer a more dusky version of turquiose. That's why knowing your colour direction can be so powerful - want to know what yours is?

In fashion, Turquoise can make a very elegant statement and lends itself well to dress up fine silks to dress down cottons so appealing to both men and women. Boat Show Chic at Ladies Day

There are those amongst us that organise their social diaries down to the last minute and probably had Ladies Day at the Southampton Boat Show planned for months. We, on the other hand, made the firm decision to go only a few days prior which may have been more to do with watching what the weather had planned...the thought of tottering on heels in the wind and rain really didn't appeal.
Personally, I've been wanting to go to a 'Ladies Day' at something for a while now but so far had never made it to Ascot or Epsom so this was going to be my first. And let's face it, there's nothing like an event completely focused on ladies that brings out the best in us, as well as our best outfits and proves the point that we just love dressing up. And don't be silly, it has nothing to do with the lure of champagne.
So although I opted out of wearing a hat, mainly because I couldn't get the darn flower thing to stay in my hair, I was curious to see what us South Coast ladies would be wearing to this prestigious event (well...Princess Anne was going to be there). I decided to take the camera along, introduce myself and snap away. These are are the pictures so do enjoy if you were there and a huge thanks to Anna Matthews and Sheryl Andrews and the lovely ladies who didn't mind me disturbing their champagne for a pose!

Off with the flip flops and on with the heels!
It did take us a while to find the Champagne Bar (I know you'd think we'd be able to sniff it out) and we were left a bit bemused when we were directed to the Ladies Loo but we did make it to claim our glass of bubbly - yum!

It was all happening even a bit of filming for the Boat Show which starred Angie Tidbury and Lou Jones looking gorgeous.

Found a great view for a bit of 'Lady Spotting' and spotted a hat - yay!

We weren't the only ladies 'working', Sonya Gibbs and Alison Parsley were collecting money in style for action medical research - a charity dedicated to improving the health of babies and children. We spotted them again later enjoying their well deserved bottle of champers!

More ladies looking fab in colour and all posing rather well!

A bit of effortless style I think - spotted the animal print bag and shoes - got my vote for the on-trend accessories for the day!

Well I have to say, we quite enjoyed our little expedition to Ladies Day and yes it did help that the sun shone brightly so we didn't look too silly wearing our sunglasses and pretty dresses. There was a prize for the Best Dressed Lady courtesy of the Daily Echo but unfortunately we couldn't stay for the duration, although did meet the Daily Echo photographer, Paul Collins, very nice man who does a spot of painting on the side. Congratulations to Angie Jones, who won.

We'll be back for next years event...and look forward to it.

Autumn/Winter 09 Fashion Trends For Her

We’re still in the grip of a recession with some forecasts telling us not to fret as we’re coming out of it and others claiming more doom and gloom. But fashion is not to be kept at bay...it just responds accordingly. So as with last season and much to my joy the general ethos is still in investment buying and looking for pieces that you will wear and wear again...and wear again, you get the idea.
To sum up, for the fashion aware, look for well defined shoulder lines and detailing, coats as your investment buy, animal prints, flat brogues, over the knee boots, belts. Also note the use of velvet and the expected sequins and furs. So we've done our research and here are our 10 Key Fashion Trends:

(1) The Killer Shoulders
With some of the shoulder designs coming off the catwalks they could just kill someone...or at least have their out. The 80‘s are further making a comeback with a lot of attention being paid to shoulders and ladies, we’re not just talking shoulder pads. The shoulder line has widened and there are variations from full-on puffs to structured sleeves. Look for pointed, polished silhouette definition, shoulder padding and fussy and over embellishment.
The celebrities are all donning them and while treading that sometimes fine line of style genius and comedy - anything goes!
Min says:
Shoulder emphasis adds width so bear this in mind when dressing for your body shape and scale. If you're short, stick to smaller shoulders to avoid a stocky look. Keep with a look that defines the waist and avoid if your arms are overly large - they will just look bigger.

(2) The Asymmeric cut & tea dresses
We had the asymmetric dress of the summer which continues with the winter version of baring one shoulder. Choose from a relaxed option for the day or a glammed up look for the evening.

(3) Slimmer trouser lines
Yes they're still here from Summer but more structured now in winter materials. Look for flat or peg top trousers with a narrow leg and a shorted hem, typically worn with pumps.
Min says:
If you have a longer 'peg' style pair of trousers then why not just pin them up for the shorter length. If you're wider around the middle then avoid the baggy trouser look - stick to flat fronted. Bare in mind your body proportions so the narrower and shorter length will cut you off if you have short legs. Balance with a wider top silhouette.

(4) Tulips, draped and pleated shapes
There are a versatile set of skirt and dress shapes to suit any body shape and personal style from creating volume and draping to slim and pleated classic cuts.

(5) The Androgynous Look
Not for everyone but you can't avoid the trend for the Boyfriend blazer and cardigans, distressed and even ripped jeans (shock, horror...they're back!). The 'manly' military look is still in - inspired from Michael Jackson. A fabulously cheap chic option if you have a man in your life where you can raid his wardrobe, if not, here are some options.

We like: Pleat Placket Longline Cardigan - £30, Braided Military Jacket - £55, Helene Berman Long Boyfriend Blazer - £95 all from ASOS

(6) Investment Buy - Statement Coat
If you haven’t done it yet, consider a statement coat as your staple buy. The trick here is to know the length and style that will suit your body shape. Keep with a coat that really does do the job of keeping you warm, allows for movement and feels comfortable. Your 'statement coat' has to be seen as an investment and so remember to consider the cost per wear. Good value may mean spending a bit more but if it's an item you will happily pull out and wear Season after Season, then it will pay itself back.

(7) Oooh love those shoes!
For the slim of leg amongst us the 'over the knee boot' is for you, flat or heeled. Lovely lace up ankle boots in the seasons colours and look out for the flattest of flat brogues competing for centre stage with spiky heels. You'll see a variety of materials and textures from animal prints to roses, ribbon and lace.

8 - Layered knits
The season for layering - in addition to chunky cable knits to wrap up warm, look for fine knits that drape and give an air of luxury.

9 - Leather Mania, Velvet Chic, Houndstooth, Tweeds and More
Rock chic, heavy metal and a bit of punk, that would sum up some of the materials for the season. Add to that zips, studs and buckles and you have it - see them being used unusually on just about everything from clothing to accessories.

Animal prints are back - in true 80's style, they're back in a variety of bright colours and if it suits your wardrobe style, wear them clashing!
We like: Animal Print Dress - Warehouse £60

Dog/houndstooth (remember them!) and tweeds. The influence of Chanel isn't over and you'll see modern updates to these classic looks from full length to cropped styles. We like: Halsey Coat - Hobbs £229

An exciting come back is the use of velvet - it's fantastic for the feeling of luxury and elegance. I can't wait to see more of it in the stores for dresses to jackets. Talking of jackets - don't forget faux fur and if you don't have a gilet - good time to get one.

(10) Accessorise with chic updates
My favourite section so here are my accessory update tips:
- Bags - Keep them smaller, clutch like, more vintage with the influence again of the Chanel braided handles. Bags take on all the colour and materal trends of the season - a good time to have a look at what you have at the back of the wardrobe and certainly permission to rummage the charity stores or TKMAXX is always good fun!
- Opaque coloured tights - fab for dressing down a formal outfit or brightening one up
- Belts - Wear your belts Mobama style which is over your coat or cardigan. Another cost effective way to bring outfits together and introduce a seasons colour. If you're larger around the waist, usually belts are not for you - use another accessory to achieve the same effect.
- Jewellery - Invest in the use of ribbon and appliques in necklaces and look for oversized metal necklaces with clashing colours of the season.
- Flowers - Love this trend as it's a favourite of mine already. You'll see flowers of all descriptions on anything from corsages, necklaces, hair-pieces to show and dress decoration. This can be another cheap way of updating of not only an outfit but another accessory - try pinning on your bag.

This Seasons Colours

We’re just loving the colours being bought out this season as they're certainly a break from the the usual autumnal range that we see this time of year. Great for my profession and the fashion conscious as they'll be something for all colour tones from the Deep & Dusky through to Bright & Cool. So all you ladies that have your colour swatches at hand, take a look...you'll now know what suits and how to wear them. Look out for them (or as close to) in the stores!

What does Pantone say? Your Autumn/Winter '09 colour trends

American Beauty is a balanced true red - a nice feel good colour. Purple Heart, purple continues its regal reign as a key colour of refinement. Pair these together for a wow combination. The pantone Colour of the Year, Mimosa has a warmer, more subdued edge as move into Autumn with the warm Honey Yellow.

Added to the mix are some timeless neutrals. Look out for Iron as the new black...yes I know they keep changing the ‘new black’ but I rather like this one. Crème Brûlée, a grayed-down beige, and Nomad, which bridges the gap between beige and light gray. If you're natural colouring allows, you can combine these neutrals and look fab, otherwise combine with another hue to create contrast and interest.

Slightly different and a welcome addition is the feminine Rapture Rose to provide some vibrancy and spark - think dusky fuchsia and it certainly lifts the more traditional autumn/winter shades.

Also look out for Warm Olive, a rich yellow-green, adds a touch of elegance and sophistication. One of my favourites this season is the Majolica Blue - it’s being described as a vibrant, deep, mysterious blue….oooh but that's so me.

Now the season wouldn't be complete without a usual suspect or two and for that we have the autumn sunset shade of Burnt Sienna to bring that orange touch. And as we move into the silly season of partying, they'll be an abundance of metallic tones of bronze, gold and silver sequins and shimmer on just about everything.

So have fun looking out for these colours around you and in the stores. Take control back of your wardrobe space

Are you standing (or crouching) in front of your wardrobe not just thinking I have nothing to wear but...what on earth have I got in there?
A mixed up array of t-shirts, blouses, scarves all screaming for your attention every time you open the closet? Trousers, jackets and dresses, squashed and creased to the point where ironing them before they go into the great chasm was a pointless exercise?
In a time when we are all being that extra careful with our spend, it's even more important to know what you have, maximise on it and get back to enjoying the experience of getting dressed! It’s time to take control back of one of your major investments - your wardrobe.

And that starts with a de-clutter, here are my 5 top tips to get you started:

There’s no getting away from it, everything piece of clothing and accessory has to come out of your closet, not only to allow each item to be scrutinised and understand what you have but to allow you to see what space you have to organise...before anything goes back.
Be ruthless! Try each piece of clothing on in front of the mirror and get the recycling bags ready for anything that does not fit anymore or is uncomfortable (remember ladies - you can always save it for our next swish event). And this includes those items in there being saved for when you lose the weight.
Know the colours, shapes and styles that best suit you for your work and personal lifestyle and apply this knowledge - a must for a really honest wardrobe de-clutter.
Can it be revamped or updated? If you love a piece of clothing but know it’s not your best then if it can be salvaged using the tricks of accessorising, the haberdasery tool box or given a new lease of life with a sewing machine, it can have a ticket back into the wardrobe.
Does it need mending, if so...mend it or have it mended - still a less expensive option than buying new.

Note: I can't emphasise enough what a liberating experience this can be!

But before you even contemplate going shopping for those now identified wardrobe gaps, remember you have a bedroom full of clothes, accessories and shoes that need to go back in...so time to organise, organise, organise and get clever with some workable storage solutions - here are the basics with some ideas:

While everything is out of your wardrobe, it's a good opportunity to give it a good clean!
Spend a bit of time to evaluate the space you have versus the kinds of garments you have. While it's unlikely you can have a whole new wardrobe appropriate for your garments, there are many storage solutions to explore that means you can at least maximise on the space you have.
Ensure there is sufficient hanging space for longer items like your dresses, jackets and coats, as well as shorter space for shirts, blouses and trousers.
Ensure you have adequate shelving space for folded items such as jumpers and t-shirts. Become a folding expert, be strict with yourselves - it really is the only way not to introduce chaos! When the seasons change, there is no harm in rearranging items or storing the big woolly sweaters away.

Invest in space saving and instant tidying storage solutions for your shoes (you'll wonder how you ever managed without see through shoe boxes).
Try boot shapers for keeping boots not only tidy but upright as well.
Invest in good quality wooden hangers. This does not have to be expensive and something you can build up over time but it's a must over metal hangers. Ikea and Tescos provide fantastic value and I love these pink wooden ones from www.aplaceforeverything.co.uk.
Get clever with hanging space for accessories that you can see alongside with items in your wardrobe, for example for belts, hats, scarves and even jewellery. Even those clever stick on hooks from a DIY store can be cheap and easy way of hanging necklaces and scarves on the inside of your cupboard door. Failing that, opt for hanging shelves and good old Ikea is a good place to start.

There are some simple and quite innovative options for managing drawer space that can help with keeping your smalls organised, avoid odd socks or even keep belts and scarves in check.
Hanging sachets and drawer liners are a good anti-moth option. Try lavendar - I've read that while us humans love the aroma of fresh lavender, moths and ants don't (so no laughing if your grandmother still sprinkles lavender in the linen closet...she knows what she's doing).
Finally make sure you leave some breathing space for new items!

Can I wear leggings?

In my professional opinion....yes, if you feel it's 'you'. The trick is knowing which styles, colours (and lengths) to stick to and what to avoid and then how to wear it. With the Autumn 2009 fashion trends already emerging, leggings are still going to be around and while there'll be those out there that think they're the worst thing since the jumpsuit and ra-ra skirts, you won't be able to escape them.

If you've never worn leggings or dismissed them as not for you, consider some of their positives:

Celebrate your femininity. Leggings are great for this when combined with dresses or tunics. They can be worn together as the perfect solution to our very changeable weather, rather than opting for the usual jeans or trousers. This is possibly the look you'll see the most and the one that can be adopted by most of us. It's a fun and versatile way of updating an outfit and keeping your dresses, tunics and shirts wearable just about all year round.
Attention to your feet! The leggings look is great way of showing off a pedicure, heck, it can even be the excuse for having one! And depending on your own style, leggings look fab with pumps, high heels, fashionable sandals and ankle boots so an on-trend way of showing off your footwear.
Instant trim. Leggings worn in the right way can be very flattering on the leg as they are made of thicker material than tights and so will hold you in better giving a trimmer, firmer look.
Leggings are comfortable - I can sincerely, absolutely vouch for this.
A more daring you? Depending on your own personal style, you can have fun with the colours, textures and styles that you introduce into your wardrobe and expressing yourself.
I'm not showing my knees! I'm the perfect of example of this as I've worn my black leggings with a dress because (1) it's such a lovely hot day, I wanted to wear a dress but (2) needed to cover up some rather unsightly bruises I managed to acquire during a game of badminton (now the fact that I fell on my knees will give you an idea of how that game went...). So leggings can be just the right cover up solution whether hiding bruises (!) or for those who are more leg conscious.
Day to night. Leggings can be very versatile in creating a comfortable look for the day and updated and accessorised (e.g. swap flip flops for heels) for a just as comfortable evening look.

So I'm a fan and feel that there is a ensemble that includes leggings for just about anyone at pretty much any age. Of course you have to like the look and your own 'wardrobe personalities' will have something to say about that (those that have had their Style Session will know what I am talking about). But you do have to know how to wear them and what to watch out, so here are ..... key things to give you the confidence to step out in leggings in style:

Which dress or tunic style? Consider your body shape in order to ensure the dress is the right fit and structure. Either way, avoid anything too clingy so as not to show up the lines of the leggings underneath. There are many styles to try from empire lines and fine knits to A-lines and shift dresses in a range of patterns and textures. If you're a shaped you can team with a belt and if a straight, the structured shift dress will be just right.
You will also need to understand your best length of dress which will take into account your own body proportions. If you're heavier on your thighs, stick to a dress length that hits your knee or just above or just below, otherwise go for mid-thigh.

**Style note** You will see leggings being worn with short tops...please steer clear of this! Leggings are not a substitution for trousers or jeans!!

What length of leggings? Notably there are 3: just below the knee, mid-calf and ankle. The ideal for you will again be dependent on your body proportions and scale and the lengths of top that you choose to team with to ensure you don't look out proportion.

What colour and type of leggings? If you look around the shops, you will see all sorts of textures, materials, patterns and colours and so the choice is yours (and that wardrobe personality again!). The 'safest' is to stick to black or dark colours like charcoal grey and brown. If you're not sure and not 'dramatic' enough not to care, I would suggest checking the other colours you are wearing and echo this with your leggings colour choice. As for types, you'll find a range of materials to suit, from nylon to spandex!

And it seems you guys want to get in on, or should I say into this gem of a garment. Ooooh, no....I really don't think so!

In conclusion, most of us can carry the leggings look if you want to and by remembering a few tips, can be very fashionable with it. Remember fashion should be fun, should make a statement, should allow a sense of creativity and individualism and above all, should evolve. How else would us women have even got into trousers if it wasn't for the sheer audacity and spirit of Marlene Dietrich and Katherine Hepburn donning the trouser suit in public?
And so it is with leggings.

Stylish Clothes Swapping!

We're fresh from holding our first Swishing Party called 'Swish with a Twist' which went down a treat and we held up our end of the bargain of making sure everyone went home with something sweet!

Before I go any further...do you all know what 'Swishing' is?
Swishing is a craze that has come over from the US and best described as a clothes swapping party for women. The idea is that all the ladies attending must bring at least one item of clothing to swap, for Swish with a Twist, we advised bringing 3 items. These items should be in good condition but just something that no longer works for you, either it doesn't fit, you have too many or it's just not your 'personal style' - these are all donated into the swapping pool. In return they get to choose anything they want once the party gets started!
We were also careful to prepare enough stock to ensure we had a good variety of sizes from 10 to 18. I know we had a lot of size 5 shoes though...because a lot of them were mine!!

So why Swish?

"Telling women not to shop is like telling the Pope not to pray. Women always want clothes, credit crunch or not. I love a good swish."

As commented by Twiggy, taken from her book A Guide To Looking And Feeling Fabulous Over 40... in fact the 59-year-old face of Marks and Spencer, goes as far as saying that clothes-swapping parties (or swishing) were a good solution to beating the credit crunch.
But don't just take my word (or Twiggy's!) for it, even the July 2009 issue of Good Housekeeping which features an article on ways to balance our budget talks about swishing as a 'new thinking' approach instead of buying a new outfit.

There is, however, a serious side to clothes swapping. On average, us British women can easily spend £450 a year on items that we never wear and even more shocking, one in 10 of us will just chuck these unworn garments straight in the bin. Now that contributes to an estimated 900,000 tonnes of clothing thrown into landfills each year! So by understanding how to shop better and recycling items items that no longer work for you, e.g. by swishing can not only be good for your bank balance, but it is an ethical form of fashion, encouraging recycling and is kinder to the environment.

Our Swish with a Twist Story

Our Party was on 17th June and we held it Yoma on Bedford Street....I think they were a little shocked at the extent of the transformation from humble coffee shop to a female dominated... boudoir!

There was plenty of mixing and mingling with some delicious drinks while we sorted out the Swishing Stock as it arrived. And I could see a few excited faces as they started to eye up what was coming in!

And then the time arrived...on your marks, get set....Go Swish!
The next hour and a half was a bit of a whirl but mostly spent running up and down stairs to help people try on items they might not normally have chosen or give some gentle and honest advice. It's amazing how different clothing can look hanging on the rail compared to on an actual body. But ladies, it wasn't just garments, we had shoes, bags, scarves and accessories to choose from.

And when it all got a bit much, there was plenty of reason to take a break to try some delicious delights provided by Yoma, in between battling changing rooms, stairs, hangers and mirrors!

We even got to celebrate a birthday as my lovely co-host, Anna Matthews was embarrassed into taking center stage...how I actually managed to divert attention from clothes swapping to singing Happy Birthday beats me...!

Judging from the laughter and smiley faces, we're pretty sure that everyone went home happy with something a little different in their wardrobes that they're actually going to wear! But just to make sure, everyone also got a cup cake treat (and between me and you, the mocca chocca was the best, go try one!).

Capsule Wardrobe Conundrums

Have you taken the Wardrobe Waste Test yet? If you’ve heard me speak on this subject before you might be familiar with this but, if not, give it go, and yes you guys can do it too:

- Close your eyes and mentally picture your wardrobe
- Open it up and throw on the bed everything you haven’t worn in the past 6-12 months. And I mean everything from clothes, shoes, hats, coats, belts, jewellery...the lot!
- Now total up the value of the items on the bed - that is the amount of money you're wasting.

(Feel free to take a moment to get over the resulting shock if you need to with a drink of water, cup of tea or something stronger...depending on the size of your shock).

According to a survey by climate change charity, Global Cool, last year British women spent a whopping £11 billion on clothes, shoes and accessories that were never worn
– accounting for more than half of the total female fashion spend! So perhaps it's not such a shocking statistic that most women in the UK still only wear between 20-30% of the contents of their wardrobe? Regardless of whether you have a small wardrobe or one busting at the seams, love shopping or detest it, that still amounts to a noticeable sum of money wasted...up to 80% of the total amount you spend in fact.

In today's economic and green climate, we can't afford that.

So why do we continue to struggle with what to wear and continue to make the same wardrobe mistakes?
You have a closet full of dresses that you hardly wear (Note: at this point, reasons unknown) and you’re off shopping only to come home with another pretty dress that ends up straight in the wardrobe with all the others.
Why did you buy? Because it was a bargain, the latest fashion, it fit...
The inevitable result? Alright, there is the state of euphoria that ensues many of us when making a purchase - any purchase. But, if you haven’t worn any of the other dresses in your wardrobe, why on earth do you think you will wear this one? Brief ecstasy is followed by the depressing realisation that you’ve just spent more money and only increased the problem.

While this is just an example and by no means a broad summation of all women out there (particularly if you don’t like dresses), it highlights the very real fact that the underlying reasons for this behaviour have not been addressed. And until it is we'll continue to repeat the same patterns with the same approach and attitudes to how we look and see ourselves.

Will a 'Capsule Wardrobe' solve the problem?
The nation's current favourite, Gok Wan has bought the subject of capsule wardrobes to our attention. It's not a new term but is one open to varying reactions ranging from those who fully embrace the idea to those who shrink back in fear that their female (and for some males) right to shop will be taken away! If you've never heard the term, let me explain, a clothing (or cluster) capsule is the idea of having a small group of key items in your wardrobe that are versatile enough to mix and match with each other creating a larger collection of complete outfits.

Capsule wardrobes are a great concept for just about anybody but particularly useful when putting together a wardrobe on a tight budget, or for a holiday or when needing to travel light. You will find a great many books, more TV programs, YouTube videos and indeed blogs on the subject of how to create a capsule wardrobe, even to the point of telling you exactly what and how many key items you should have in it!

If only it was that easy.

The idea of taking a grocery list of items and creating 'perfect wardrobe capsules' is certainly very appealing but the reality is that you could very easily waste a lot of time, effort, not to mention money on creating something that is still totally inappropriate for you. Possibly good for your mum, or your best friend but not you. Why? For the simple reason that we are all unique individuals, with our own sense of style, colouring and body shapes and attitudes.

I advise first creating a Wardrobe Capsule Foundation which is based on a solid understanding of your personal image and style and what you need and want out of the way you dress.

This foundation is first and foremost influenced by:
- an understanding of the clothing shapes that suit your body shape;
- appreciating your most flattering palette of colours based on your natural colouring;
- embracing your personal sense of style

Only once these have been established can you apply it to lifestyle needs and be in a position to honestly assess what you have already in your wardrobe, how you can wear it and what the gaps are to shop for. It's at this point that clothing capsules can start to take shape, within the right budget of course.

It's also important to bear in mind that this process can mean reassessing those very basic items (clothing fundamentals) in the wardrobe, for example, ensuring that you have the right fitting underwear to flatter your body shape? The same can be applied with with skirts, dresses, trousers, shoes and so on. It is worth getting to grips with this before you buy more of the same (clothing fillers) and certainly before you can wear the latest trends (clothing fashion) sensibly without wasting money.

This is by no means an overnight process, it does take time, discipline, self-awareness and an initial investment in understanding what works for you (that's where I come in by the way) to build this foundation. It will stand you in good stead and become second nature giving you the freedom to buy with the confidence of knowing you won't bump into the same wardrobe challenges, season after season.

Right now, each of us have around £500 worth of items hidden at the back of the wardrobe or worse, chucked straight in the bin - shhh. so it's well worth the investment of time and money in building the right wardrobe capsules for you.

And if the very term ‘capsule wardrobe' turns you off, my tip is to start calling it something else...My "Bohemia" Wardrobe or My "Ultra Chic" Wardrobe, My "Yummy Mummy" Wardrobe or perhaps My “I’ve hit 40 and Proud Of It Wardrobe!

A Classy Act

You know when you've got to know someone well when you can't quite remember how you actually met. If memory serves me correctly with Lynda, it had something to do with constantly bumping into each other in the car park on the way to yet another networking event! After gaining an understanding of what we both do, we've worked together on a number of projects focused on the synergy between our businesses. I asked Lynda to tell me a little more about herself and her business...

Lynda Bromfield is in the profession of selling designer clothes and accessories at discounted prices with her own boutique company, Classy Clothes.

How did Classy Clothes come about?
I started the business on the 1st March 2008 after a period of selling for someone on a commission basis. It was while doing this that it dawned on me that I was doing most of the work for not very much money which was when I decided to go it on my own and buy my own stock. Initially I sold stock on a sale or return basis for local boutiques in the area which was useful as I didn't have to make a huge investment in the early days.

Who are your clients?
That's easy! Any woman who wants to look great any time of the day...or night!

What's the passion behind Classy Clothes?
The simple truth is that the cost of designer clothes in retail stores today are out of most people's reach and perhaps even more so in the current economic downturn. At Classy Clothes our aim is to provide top quality designer clothes and accessories with prices kept at a minimum. We want our customers to feel a million dollars without having to spend the same amount!

How did you grow the business...
Over the months (after a blissful wedding in September and honeymoon in October), I gradually increased my stock and the number of labels sold by Classy Clothes. This was a turning point as I made the conscious decision to really give setting up a business a go so increased the the investment...both time and money! So really, Classy Clothes is quite young but, I'm pleased to say, going from strength to strength.

The key to developing a strong brand
It's important to be available online and the Classy Clothes website went live at the end of August and has been completely rewritten once (when I broke my leg!). I now have a blog, my own stationery, the Classy Clothes purple bags and a great investment was the credit card machine - a godsend for clients for ease of payments.

What would you say your Unique Selling Point is?
My business has evolved because clients know they can come to me for a unique outfit, knowing that I only ever buy a small number of each piece (...sometimes only one!). I can also source outfits for people - I've been asked for anything from a wedding dress, prom dress to a cocktail dress with only 48hrs notice!
My labels have changed over time, too. I now have my own exclusive labels to the area, again this is what my clients like. They can come to me for that personal touch, knowing that their purchases are unlikely to be seen in the High Street.
My labels include James Lakeland (with his special permission), Eva Tralala, Saint Hilaire, Belinda Robertson, Northlands, Ceci, Pia Rossini accessories and Miglio Designer Jewellery. I have two new labels for Autumn/Winter 2009, one completely new to this country and the other new to the area but a favourite of mine.

Give It Some Welly!

I know we're past the April Showers but let's face it living in England means we're never too far away from a downpour...and typically lot's of it! On this subject, I was thinking of writing an article on umbrellas but found you really could go a little colour co-ordination mad with them and when the rain is coming down on you hard and horizontally, the last thing on your mind is does my umbrella match my natural skin tone and more likely, is it going to hold up! So instead I've settled for another possibly underestimated wet weather item...the Wellington Boot.

We have a lot to thank the first Duke of Wellington (Arthur Wellesley 1769-1852) for, not just for the great win at the Battle of Waterloo or for providing a suitable namesake for pubs but indeed for his unrivalled sense of dress. The Duke was something of a style icon with many of his clothes being specially designed for him, including what he wore on his feet, whether going into battle or otherwise. It was by instruction from Wellington to modify the original 18th century 'Hessian' boot that he inadvertently stumbled upon the makings of a now much celebrated boot style which would then be known as the 'Wellington boot'.

The Wellington boot has evolved with the rubber version being made popular by entrepreneur Henry Lee Norris who founded the North British Rubber Company in 1856 (to become the Hunter Rubber Company, makers of the well known Hunter Rubber Wellington Boot...you know, the brand sported by Kate Moss trudging through mud in Glastonbury).

My first pair of wellies
I never owned a pair of wellies until moving down to the South Coast, always thinking what on earth do I want a pair of ugly green rubber boots for? Of course, a short walk in the New Forest and a wintery stroll on the beach quickly put an end to that way of thinking and so I started researching. I was very pleasantly surprised and quickly jumping up and down in excitement at the sheer range colours and designs of the traditional wellington boot, to the point of being exasperating...which ones should I choose? You can see the ones I chose but I have a feeling they won't be my last pair...

Even Jimmy Choo is in on the act, teaming up with Hunter to create a

“Staff threat after PE teacher is sacked for wearing trainers in class.”
That’s outrageous, he’s a PE teacher, why shouldn’t he be able to wear trainers? But on further reading, he also taught Maths and, although achieving an exemplary 30 year record, should he really have been wearing trainers in the classroom? Whether or not this teacher should have been sacked is not for me to comment but as an Image Consultant with a background in business marketing, (and someone that went to school...wasn’t keen on PE but loved Maths), what it does raise is the fact that what teaching and non-teaching staff wear is extremely important...and a somewhat passionate subject.

There has been an on-going debate as to what the ‘dress code’ for school teachers should be that seems to fluctuate between the need to address teachers dressing scruffily to the argument that a suit and tie can be impractical...and don’t even get me started on the early attempt of some schools to ban women teachers from wearing trousers! But why is it such an important argument, here are some points to consider:

First impressions count. Whether you’re the head teacher, the primary school teacher or the teaching assistant, decisions about you are being made by all those you meet and come in contact with, from the education authorities to parents to the students. In fact, a staggering 93% of those impressions are formed based on your appearance, body language and tone of voice, so knowing how to dress and present yourself within your working environment is a crucial factor to reflecting the right image.

Teachers are part of a School’s Marketing. Each time a staff member steps through the school gates (and to a certain extent, outside of them!), they represent the school, it’s core values and principles and is key to any marketing communications initiatives. It therefore follows that there is an expectation that the way staff dress and present themselves should reflect this.

Teachers are in a position of trust. How we dress says a lot about us. Parents, the community, the authorities as well as the students need to feel that the teaching and non-teaching staff are trustworthy, professional and competent.

Teachers are not just teachers. I read an article about this and it struck me how true this can be. Teachers can often be called upon to wear many hats: nurses, psychologists, social workers, parent counselors, secretaries, as well as possibly being parents themselves! The way they dress also needs to portray a sense of openness and approachability.

So now we know the why, what should staff be thinking about when choosing what to wear.

The Look Good, Feel Good, Teach Better Principle.

Dress appropriately for the subject and audience. Where the PE teacher may have gone wrong was still looking like a PE teacher when teaching Maths in the classroom. Think about the messages you are sending out as the teacher and about the subject. Science does not necessarily mean a suit and tie because it is deemed a ‘serious’ subject but at the other extreme, jeans and t-shirt are equally inappropriate. Clothing that is too revealing, too ‘loud’ or too tight are also not considered fitting.

Practicality and comfort is key. If you’re going to be on your feet all day, sensible shoes and clothing that fits is essential. Your focus is on teaching - not how uncomfortable you are - something that students will instantly pick upon. Primary school teachers as an example, will need to think about clothing they can not only, stand in, but kneel, sit, bend and stretch and possibly run in!
Choose versatile clothing. It is useful to opt for versatile pieces and separates where you can create a collection of outfits (and this equally applies to male teachers). Layering can be a good option, particularly if the classroom temperature varies but also as you can quickly don a jacket for a more formal look, for example, for parents evening. It may even be a good idea to have a spare outfit or a spare shirt, tie or blouse...in case of those little accidents.
Keep a sense of individuality and style. Being a teacher does not mean you can’t have a sense of style or keep an eye on fashion but you will need to remember the rules of what is appropriate for the classroom, subject, audience and in representing the school. Ensure you are not wearing anything that will cause distraction and avoid overly flashy accessories as this could also be distracting and impractical. Most childrens schools also don't allow the children to wear jewellery so it could be inflammatory if you go to town.
Dress for your body shape. Male or female, an instant confidence booster is ensuring that what you wear is right for your body shape, proportions and scale. Particularly if you do have some figure challenges, getting advice on how to manage this with your attire can work miracles by taking the eye to more positive areas. And again, focusing the classroom on what is being taught.
Importance of colour. Colour is a powerful communicator, evoking a more or less universal set of emotions and reaction so consideration should be given to what colours you should wear. You will look more refreshed, radiant and natural when wearing colours that compliment your natural hair and eye colour and skin tone. Ideally, female teachers should wear make-up, even if just a little but care should be taken on its application and quality and ensure that it is not over powering...keep the more daring eye-shadows for the evenings!
Have a top-down checklist! Grooming and finishing touches can be essential as these will be obvious when in front of classroom full of students and so it’s always advisable to do a quick head to toe check in the mirror:

Does you hair look well kept? Does it need a cut? Are there any issues that should be addressed? Is it in an appropriate style.

What does your profile look like – remember in a classroom you may be walking about and so seen from different angles, particularly the back. Keep your pockets clear and make sure you do not have anything distracting, hanging or creating unnecessary attention on your clothing.

Check your tights for ladders and keep a few spare pairs in your drawer. Polish your shoes and ensure heels are clean.

There's no doubt that what teaching and non-teaching staff wear in the classroom is of real significance not only to ensure the schools and profession are appropriately represented but also to gain the respect and trust of those around them. Enforcing dress codes, however, can be a tricky subject. In my humble opinion, one where a common sense approach is needed with input from all parties so the correct interpretations and examples are developed to avoid confusion (and possible embarrassment) by all.

By the way, the teacher in the headline lost his appeal (March 2009) and subsequently there were a series of strikes supported by the NUT to have him re-instated.

Hotting up for Spring/Summer 2009

And I, for one, certainly hope it's going to be a hot one this year! Even though we are in the deepest of deep recessions, clothes are still needed so the key to style ownership for 2009 (and, quite frankly is how we should always be thinking) is to know what you look good that suits your body shape and personal style, invest wisely and maximise on what you have. It's about being selective and cost conscious with an eye on quality over quantity.
Here are my Top 10 Tips for what to look out for Spring/Summer 2009:

1. Colour Yellow for 2009
It's already featured in this issue of Stylise and brings with it a warm injection of optimisim into the fashion world and the high street. Introduce the colour with any of this seasons items or why not just a simple scarf, jewellery or belt? If you can carry it, team this colour with golden, bronze and shimmering metallic tones.

2. Dresses
Finally time to get out of tights and leggings and show off those legs. Or if you still prefer, team with jeans or trousers but ladies...it's dress time! One of things I often hear from my clients is a desire to feel more feminine and there is nothing more so than wearing a dress and there are enough out there to suit any body shape.
This season look out for 60's A-line shift dresses, the Grecian drape styles, maxi, kimono and kaftan style dresses, one-shoulder designs, tulip or cocoon tiered over straight skirts.

3. Romp around in the jumpsuit!
Just when you thought we couldn't bring anything else back from the 60's...the jumpsuit is back and it's big. These were extremely popular and I can still remember wearing my mum's maroon number. These have come back in all sorts of shapes and styles with varying trousers lengths and widths, in every material there is and incorporating the latest sleeves, necklines and trends so you will be spoilt for choice! Persoanally I haven't ventured into trying one on yet but these are sure to be a fun and versatile piece!

4. Sleeves and Shoulder emphasis
This season sees a lot of interest in the shoulders and arms with sleeves of every design making a comeback. Look out for kimono and kaftan draped sleeves, batwing, cap sleeves and puff shaped all in a variety of lengths. Good news if you do prefer to cover up your arms but choose wisely so as not to take your over all look out of proportion and over-emphasis larger framed arms.

5. Wear it in blocks and wear it bold!
While yellow is the chosen colour of the year, this time of the year always brings with it bright and vibrant tones. Favourites are fuchsia pink (one of my favourites!) and orange and strong colours continuing from the Autumn - purple, jade, cobalt and midnight blue. Neutrals for this season see a return to black and dark navy and an abundance of soft beiges and creams.
Mix and match bold colours in block pieces, not so much to shock but elegantly lift the spirits! But if you are more conservative then team block colours with neutrals and accessories.

6. Trousers (...this one is not for everyone!)
The newest styles are harem pants and carrot top and peg top trousers. Often these have a dropped crotch and so can look amazing or hideous...depending on how you wear them in line with your body shape. It is important to balance the top half and emphasise waist with a belt.

7. Sheer fabrics
The love of see through pieces and sheer fabrics continues and this trend does lend itself to be worn in many ways depending on your wardrobe personality. For the more daring out there you may be fine using it to expose a bit of lingerie but for others, it can be a flattering for a more modest cover up. Look out for layering, draped and ruffles in dresses, trousers, tops, blouses and accessories.

8. Draping
I love this trend as, again, it can be worn by a variety of body shapes since there is a flattering focus on the waist or side waist. Retailers everywhere are picking up on this from day to formal wear with an eye on modesty. Draping effects are created by folds, neat pleats, tucks, and bow ties all in the seasons hot colours.

9. Fringing and Embellishment
Remember the flapper dress trend of 2008, it's now moved on by taking it's key element - fringing and interpreting it in a very modern and chic way so it positively moves with you. If you've got the legs you can carry off the shorter hem line with fringe detail. Otherwise anything with any kind of fringe or embellishment detail is must wardrobe update and if you can't buy it then why not think about adapting or enhancing an item you already have.

10. Accessory update
Apply all of the above colour and fashion trends to your accessories, including shoes, belts and bags - particularly the fringing and embellishent. Belts are wide and heels are still high...in fact teetering high!

Colour of the Year

Pantone selects as it's Colour of the Year: PANTONE 14-0848 Mimosa. What does that mean, I hear you ask and isn't mimosa a lovely flower and an even lovelier champagne cocktail?

Basically it means yellow is going to be big for 2009. Now I can already hear a few of you out there thinking but yellow just doesn't suit me but I'm here to tell you everyone can wear yellow, it's just a case of knowing what your best shade of yellow is?

A previous article gave an insight into the psychology of colour and I humbly believe this is a great choice of colour for the year as it brings a much needed brightness and warmth in a time of such doom and gloom news.

So what's your best yellow?
When I'm doing a Colour Analysis session, I always chuckle when we tackle the 'yellows' as 9 times out of 10, I'll hear...urghh...I'd never wear that yellow but once we've finished, my clients realise the amazing colour palette that is now open to them and it includes the their right shades of yellow!

The Mimosa shade is a warm hue and those with a warm colour direction will have no problem carrying this off. Those that are not (me for example!) will need a version more aligned with their primary colour direction. The good thing is that there will be a wide variety of shades in the stores as they interpret the colour of the year along with the fact that different materials will provide their own take on the colour in the dying process. I'll keep a look out for a future blog.

Take a bow with a bow (tie)

They are a great convenience. It is impossible to spill soup on a bow tie. In fact, it requires extreme agility to spill anything on it at all.

What do Arthur Schlesinger, Winston Churchill, Donald Duck, Frank Sinatra, Playboy Enterprises, Stan Laurel and Humphrey Bogart all have in common? Yep, they were all avid followers of the bow tie fashion. But did you know we owe this tricky tie form to a bunch of Croats and French aristocracy?

The bow tie can actually trace its ancestry back to the European Wars of the 17th century. Croatian mercenaries, in support of King Louis, used a loosely fitted scarf to keep their shirts closed and provide some protection from the cold weather. This piece of clothing was quickly adopted by King Louis, becoming a required piece of upper class french fashion and in honour of the Croats, was given the name la cravat.

The name bow tie actually comes from the French, jabot, a type of readymade 17th century lace cravat.

Over the next centuries, the bow tie made its transition to what we now know today as a sophisticated traditional piece of men's attire. Wearing one is very much personal preference. These days it tends to be associated with the likes of professors, scientists and political commentators. However for the more expressive men out there it's a great alternate to the standard tie. Something that can really show of your individualism - but as with any tie avoid Homer Simpson, in fact any cartoon characters.

Typing the perfect bow tie...
Can you? You may be an expert and think nothing of it, in which case I applaud you for upholding centuries of tradition. Or maybe you're going to be wearing one for the first time in which case read on as you will need to practice those tying skills!

	Start with the left-hand end 1 inch longer than the right.
	Cross the longer end over the shorter and pass up behind.
	Double up the free-hanging shorter end and place it across the collar points.
	Hold front loop with thumb and forefinger of left hand. Drop long end down over front.
	Place right forefinger, pointing up, on bottom part of loose hanging end. Pass up behind front loop.
	Insert resulting loop through knot behind front loop. Even ends and tighten.

Of course you can cheat and opt for the ready made ones but I warn you...it will be noticeable.

My personal comment on bow ties is that I think they should be worn more and not just reserved for the scholars, black tie events or gimmicky fashion designers. I mean the traditional gentlemanly look, where there is an air of sophistication and refinement that goes with wearing a bow tie. Although a bow tie would not be appropriate for everybody, why not try introducing it into your wardrobe? If Indiana Jones' alter ego can wear one and he's really cool, then why not? Oh damn he was also a professor...well, you get the message.

Not being shy to share my thoughts, I am of the very strong opinion that we could all do with a really good party season this year and quite frankly the sillier the better. There's been far too much doom and gloom with credit crunch here, recession there, VAT confusion everywhere and half of us thinking it was so much simpler when we thought Father Christmas existed...Ho, Ho, Ho!

Now that we’re entering December, you may already have a diary full of festive invitations, office parties, Christmas drinks and know where you’re going to be when 2009 hits us with its presence. But along with the many varieties of mince pies and mulled wine that the silly season delightfully brings, is the many dress code requirements for these social gatherings. And I should know - I’m being asked to dress up as Peter Pan for the Annual Little Ship Club Racing Christmas Party…and I don’t even race!

Formal or informal, male or female, the thought of misjudging the dress code and turning up either over or under dressed can be alarmingly stressful and even more so if your first thought is to purchase a whole new wardrobe. Hold steady! Allow me to help with the annual Christmas dress code conundrum and first take you through the dos and don’ts of Xmas attire to ensure you look the part this party season as well as keep you in the red.

The Invitation
Essential to any event is to scrutinise the invitation and understand the social context. This should give you enough clues about how formal to be dressed and whether there are any instructions on dress code, for example, white tie or smart casual. Generally these fall into the following categories:

The Cocktail Party
If the invitation does not specify, men have the option of wearing a suit and tie, or opt for a less formal look with tailored trousers, no tie, or jumper and either a blazer or a sports jacket.

For ladies, this is the time to bring out your dresses - cocktail dresses are usually knee length but I would say to get advice on your best lengths. Beware of wearing anything too long as you may feel over-dressed. Having said that we have had a season of maxi dresses which would work if in an appropriate style and material. If dresses are not your thing then consider a trouser suit - accompanied with the right accessories can create a comfortable, feminine, flattering look.
The Black Tie
Unless stated as optional, invited or preferred, this means that black tie is required. Traditional black tie consists of black tuxedo, black trousers with one stripe down the outer edge, white dinner shirt, black bow tie and smart black shoes. Cummerbunds and waistcoats may be worn and is down to personal preference.

DO invest in a good quality tuxedo if you attend many of these events - it saves in the long run and fashions do not change a great deal.
DO invest in tying a bow tie yourself - ready tied bow ties are available but will not look as good as tying it yourself so a good time to start practicing!
DON'T opt for the comedy bow ties and cummerbunds, they're not sophisticated and they're not funny.

The black ties dress code for ladies is much more relaxed with the same options as for a cocktail party but where you can safely opt for a longer dress style. What is key is to ensure whatever you choose it is in a mode that suits your body shape and personal style and is accessorised appropriately to give it that chic appeal, whether its a understated broach to diamond earrings!
The White Tie
The most formal of all invitations and where you must follow the dress code to the letter if you do not want to feel out of place. The white tie or 'evening tails' attire for men consists of back evening tail coat, white dress shirt, white bow tie, white waistcoat, black trousers and smart black shoes. If you are going to a white tie event, you may want to opt for a good hire company to ensure you are fitted out correctly particularly as there are further 'rules' to consider with the appropriate dress shirt and waistcoat.

For ladies, a white tie event is the perfect opportunity to go all out. Think movie star chic, think glamorous, think long flowing dresses, think as daring as you dare! Dresses like this should not be difficult to find, try Debenhams for a great range or take a leaf out of Liz Hurley's style book. Crown optional.
The No Jeans Please or Smart Casual
So finally the catch all dress code, perhaps used the most and sometimes the one that causes more confusion as it can be very much up to the establishments interpretation.
But, if no jeans has been stated then it means no jeans and usually includes all form of denim and certainly no trainers. The expectation is to be clean, smart and presentable with an attire that is equally so. T-shirts, slogans or logos should be avoided as should anything too over-the-top.
For some events, smart jeans can be worn, if in doubt, ask or avoid all together.
For guys a good smart casual look is a suit, or jacket and trousers with a more relaxed shirt colour and no tie. Jackets may also be optional.
Women can get away with anything from smart trousers and a blouse or top, dresses or skirts. Jackets are not necessary and again, dependent on the occasion.

The Secret of the Little Black Dress?
What is it? Quite simply...it doesn’t have to be black. This is a frustrating misconception but perhaps understandable. When in doubt, many of us go for what's safe and that way we can at least blend in and not look out of place. But ladies...firstly, how many black dresses do you own? Secondly and more importantly, black is not the colour for everybody. So why not break a habit of a lifetime and try something that is more flattering to your natural colouring that can be just as appropriate, just as flattering and just as glamorous. So go on, pass the secret on...

DON'T panic, if you are have already purchased or intend to re-use your LBD, then why not de-emphasise the black by accessorising with one of your more flattering shades as an accent colour - think jewellery, a stole, shawl or pashmina, handbags and shoes.

Finishing Touches
Just by selecting the right accessories you can not only complete an outfit but you can practically transform it. Very handy to know if you need to adapt a day time outfit to evening wear.

Options for guys - changing into a more relaxed evening shirt, tie optional, a change of shoes and pay attention to grooming.

Options for ladies - It's all about accessories and makeup. Start from head and work down.
DO change of hairstyle to an evening look - either tie up or wear down and consider hair accessories if you are OK using them. Either way, a good brush though will help!
DO consider wearing makeup. If you are accustomed to wearing makeup then apply it fresh for the evening and go for a more glam look to coordinate with your outfit. If you are not a seasonal makeup wearer then consider getting some advice on how to apply and what suits you best as even a little bit can really make all the difference.
DO make use of accessories to glam up an outfit from jewellery to belts to shoes. As a rule of thumb, accessories should reflect the size of your frame. If you are petite, keep accessories neat, if you're larger or taller, bolder accessories will be more flattering.
DO invest in a nice pair of sandals, ladies! If you are on a budget then opt for a neutral shade that will go with lot's of outfits to maximise their use. I was going to say make sure they are comfortable but ladies' heels are designed to be anything but at least ensure you can walk around in them...or invest in Party Feet!
DO invest in an evening bag. You can either use this as a great way of introducing colour to an outfit or keep it more tonal. Either way it should not be big enough to carry the kitchen sink! Think about your proportions and what you seriously need to carry.

And the final word...enjoy what you wear this party season, we don't often get the chance to dress up enough so why not have fun with it! Give yourself some time to plan ahead so there are no last minute panics and ensure that your outfits suit your personality, character, your body shape and colouring....you will certainly feel all the more confident for it as well as comfortable.

No, it's not the Boots advert nor am I trying out for the Sugar Babes, it was just the tune I had in my head while exhibiting at the What's Stopping You? event held at The Solent Hotel in Fareham and hosted by Business Link. Business Link are, of course, known for their support of small businesses in general and this was no different except that it was completely focused on women. Either encouraging women who may have thought about starting up in business but are unsure of their next steps or where to seek help or helping those women who have taken the plunge to continue to grow and develop their business.

So help is out there and with an event like this, it comes in more ways than one...

Of course, as an exhibitor, it's an opportunity to show case what I do and allow people to 'get to know me' in between downing coffee and pastries in time for the next speaker. But for all of us, whatever stage of business we are at, you can't help but soak in the stimulating, non-threatening and informative environment that an event like this creates. Not only do we all learn something from the agenda put together but there is an obvious wealth of experience surrounding you which you can tap into should you desire.

A humbling experience for me when someone who is still starting out asks you for advice and yet it is me who is all ears when I listening to the experiences of others!

A gentle but positive reminder that First Impressions count

I recently found myself in an interview situation. It was to be more informal, that much I was told but not much more on what to expect. Now it doesn't matter how many times I've spoken in front of a group of people or my past experiences, I still get nervous and so when it came to what to wear, I stuck to the rules and wore a smart black suit and blouse. (It's O.K....black is one of my colours).

Although I hadn't worn my suit in a while and initially felt a little uncomfortable, when I looked at myself in the mirror, I was pleased because I ticked the 'interview dress criteria'. I had the confidence that I looked the part and so any uncomfortable feeling drifted away as I could free my mind to concentrate on how I presented myself in the interview and what I would say.

And I was glad I made the effort as I was immediately greeted with a compliment, in fact, she went on to tell me that many people she sees do not make an effort and so instantly fall down on the most important part of an interview....first impressions. In my profession I am constantly talking about the importance of first impressions, almost to the point where I think everyone must know by now and so it was still a surprise to be told this isn't the case.

So take a few moments to think about this.

Are you sure that you are making the most of you and looking and feeling your best, whether it's running a business, going to the office, preparing for a job interview, running the kids to school or arranging a night out?

We hear the term 'first impressions count' all the time and this was my gentle but positive reminder that it is true. What about you?

Ditch those Winter blues with a Summer look all year around!

I've come to the not surprising conclusion that I suffer from SAD - Seasonal Affective Disorder, also known as the Winter Blues. How do I know this? Well quite simply because the weather has been dull, lifeless and gloomy the past few days which directly equates to me feeling a bit more subdued, less energised and generally tired. But, when I got up this morning and the sun was out and seeing it immediately changed my mood. I had a smile on my face, was decidedly jolly and even cracked a few jokes while munching through my porridge! My mood and energy levels had certainly lifted and I was ready for the day ahead. So what should I wear....

Which brings me to the subject of this blog. It dawned on me that this elation in mood and with the sun looking like it was going to stay for the day meant I was drawn to wearing something summery and that there may be many of you out there that would be feeling the same but because it is 'Winter' and therefore 'cold' we put away the summer stuff and venture out in trousers, jeans with layer upon layer of woolly clothing.

Of course there is nothing wrong with that, so long as you don't resemble an oversized sheep but I wanted to remind you that there are many ways in which to wear your summer clothes in the colder months which is great news for maximising your wardrobe and keeping the spending in check.

For some of you this may be obvious but here are just a few ideas to keep versatility in your wardrobe...all year around.

Layering is key - invest in some long sleeves tops that will work underneath your summer outfits, whether they be dresses or pretty tops. If polo necks are good on you then these are a great item to wear underneath and will keep you warm.
You can't miss the fact that tights and leggings are big this season so why not ensure you have a good stock that means you can still wear your dresses, skirts but team up with boots or shoes. There are some fantastic tights on offer and if you are really prone to the cold then wear a more chic pair with your sandals for a glam evening look.
If you invested in sleeveless but smart office attire, then don't wait until next summer to wear it again but team it up with a complimenting shirt or blouse underneath.
This can be a good time to check what cardigans and sweaters you have to see what goes with what. These kinds of clothing build up layers and can be used all year around.
Another idea are shrugs and boleros to cover up arms, check out a range from Monsoon, whether relaxed for day wear or more glam for the evening.
And thermals? I know it's not that cold yet but if you are prone to the cold then time to bring them out if it means you can still wear the summery outfits. A classic favourite with a great range are Damart.
Now I am a big fan of wearing dresses with trousers - it's not a look that everyone favours but when put together in the right way can be a great way of getting use out of your summer clothes. This look can be extended with more formal outfits but with caution so as to ensure it is still appropriate.

Lastly, think about where you are going to be in your day. The Winter months can be an odd time of going into hot and cold environments so ensure your outfit can adapt accordingly to the different climates which is why layering is such a versatile technique to adopt.

So if the mood takes you over the coming months, whether it's due to the sun popping out or not, remember with a little bit of effort, you can still wear some of your summer wardrobe, still be stylish and still be warm!

In the meantime, I intend to maximise on this good feeling and off to my meeting...now where did I put those sunglasses...

How to recession-proof your image

12 top tips to spend less and make a success of your greatest investment - you.

It’s official, Gordon Brown has finally used the ‘r’ word and all the news and media have picked up on it, scribbling out the words ‘credit crunch’ and replacing with ‘recession’. I don’t know about you but I was never very ‘stock market savvy’. Mainly because although I was aware of it fluctuating here and there, it hardly affected my everyday life. Then recent events had me glued to the set (even on holiday) watching graphs and arrows spiraling depressingly downwards...along with my PEP's and ISA's I have no doubt.

Has this been a huge wake up call for us all? Have we all been riding the crest of the 'spend now, think later' wave a little too long? Regardless, we are now in a time when we are all very spend conscious, checking our financial investments and ensuring that our hard earned money is secure for the future. But what about one key investment - you? What can you be doing to see you through the recession that saves you money, maximises your image impact and gives you a great return on investment?

First impressions don't go away in a recession, if anything, they are all the more important. With the threat of redundancies looming over many of us, businesses closing down and increased competition, how you come across can make all the difference when you need to differentiate yourself and really stand out from the crowd. Your wardrobe is one area you do have control over and having an awareness of what suits you, your personal, professional needs, style and budget will save you money in the long run as you no longer spend unnecessarily and you learn to shop effectively for it.

And there are other ways of saving money when it comes to your wardrobe which can be applied over time and with a common sense approach - here are my top suggestions:-

1. Do a wardrobe audit and ensure you have the basic, 'timeless' pieces. Before you even think about a shopping trip, whether you need one or not, you have to get to grips with what you have already. It is a good habit to get into to go out shopping with a mission. Regardless of what fashion dictates there are some items that are essential pieces and that will see you through all the seasons: a well fitted pair of jeans, a suit, shirts, T-shirts, good quality knit wear, black trousers, shoes, jackets and coats.

2. Invest in the colours that suit you. It can have a dramatic effect on how they feel and how people respond to them. You can slowly weed out the colours that do not look great and build a wardrobe full of the ‘right’ colours over time. It is essential to apply this knowledge for all future purchases and more importantly what not to buy – a great shopping conscience. Typically we shop by colour so you can easily scan the rails that way and if there is nothing that suits you out that day, then turn around and walk out.

Equally important is the knowledge of how to combine colours to their maximum effect – this will mean you get more wear out of clothing. A good test is to evaluate how much black you got in your wardrobe? How much of it looks the same, performs the same function?

3. Shop for your body shape and develop your own personal style. We’ve all done it at some point and this applies to the guys as well as the girls, tried something on that looked good on paper but just not right in the flesh. Understanding what suits your body shape and scale can save heaps of effort and wasted time in the changing room, not to mention money.

We all have our own personal style, our own attitude to clothing or a particular look we aspire to. Again, having an awareness of this will help you to interpret fashion trends: what to invest in for your wardrobe, if anything.

4. It’s not how many – it’s how good. You’ve heard it before, quality over quantity. Unfortunately it's true that for better quality you will need to pay higher prices which is why it's so important to understand what your wardrobe needs. It’s no point having 10 jumpers that will fall apart after the first few wears or washes, true false economy. Do the maths: a coat costing you £300 that you wear 100 times in the year versus a dress costing you £300 that you wear only 3 times. The cost per wear per year speaks for itself and while I appreciate it is not always that easy, it is worth bearing in mind when shopping.

5. Shop wisely in the sales and try it all on. Some people find the sales daunting and just hide from the high street until they are over but but if you know what you are looking for, they can be a good time to invest The biggest message I would like to get across is be prepared to walk away – just because the sales are on, it does not mean you have to buy something!

I am sure we all have more important things to do in life than waste it away in the returns queue so rather get it right first time and be 100% sure. Try clothes on and become organised with why you are shopping. Don't be afraid to take items you want to match with into the changing rooms, whether its the shoes, tops, trousers - aim to get it right and be happy with your purchases than having to return or stay needlessly in your wardrobe while you continue your hunt. A sure money-waster.

6. Say yes to second hand! Why not? A great opportunity to nab an amazing bargain in second hand stores and this may be just the way to get hold of something designer if you venture into one in the right area. I know someone who picked up a Mulberry bag! The trick is to always be aware of all those rules, colour, shape and what does my wardrobe need and of course, budget as you're not going to be sure of what you might find.

7. Learn the art of accessorising. I love this one as it can be one of the cheapest ways to update an outfit and maximise its use. Anything from jewellery, scarves and handbags to shoes, tights and hats and a great way of adopting a season’s highly fashionable look without going all out with a complete new outfit. And remember those clothes you already own, in colours that wash you out? A flatteringly coloured accessory worn with them is a great way to extend their life!

8. Do your research online. The Internet has revolutionised the way we shop. It gives us the whole High Street and some at our finger tips. If you know what you are looking for, why not research it? You never know what information is out there, either to guide you with what shops to go to, saving you time or opening up new avenues, like eBay.

9. Remember the 3 R’s of Resistance:

Resist the temptation for that feel good factor – This is close to my heart as I still have to fight this but it is important to not get your fix of feel good from purchases that you really don't need or can’t afford. Treat yourself to a good book or a coffee or phone a friend instead!

Resist the lure of cheap goods – While the many cheap high street stores can be great for the occasional bargain, it can be very tempting to buy items you don’t really need for precisely that reason - they're cheap. It’s amazing how the queues at Primark are always long. Great for the retailer but all those 'bargains’ do mount up in cost and when you add quality in to the mix, another false economy.

Resist the urge of the new seasons fashion items - I am a lover of fashion but it changes at such a fast pace that unless I had endless funds and a wardrobe resembling the Tardis, it is near on impossible for me to keep up with absolutely everything. You do not have to be fashionable to be stylish and so think carefully about your personal style and what elements of the trends best suit you. What the catwalks and magazines are saying are ‘must haves’ may not be appropriate for you and so really should be your ‘must not haves’.

10. Look after your wardrobe. No I don’t mean give it a clean, I mean take care of the clothes it contains. Nothing wastes money more than not paying attention with washing, hanging and storing your clothes – particularly those more expensive items – suits, jackets, shoes, boots. Sometimes washing instructions can be over strict in my opinion but it is something to bear in mind when buying clothes. You may want to think twice if you have to add on a regular dry-cleaning bill. Ensure items are well organised in your wardrobe and have room to breathe. Use wooden or plastic hangers and throw out any metal ones. Keep shoes and boots clean and think about investing in shoe boxes.

11. Revamp your clothes. Do you have items in your wardrobe which you once wore but don't anymore, either because it no longer fits, the style's a bit dated or it's too long, too short or you just don't like the sleeves? Imagine the many new outfits you could create if they could just be changed...revamped? I know there are a lot of us out there that wouldn't know what to do with a needle and thread, let alone a sewing machine, but there are places where you can learn. Failing that, seek out a good tailor and explain your creative revamp creations - it can be worth looking into as a cheaper option to a new outfit. The same applies to adapting new pieces of clothing, while many of us would not think of buying something brand new only to then take it apart but if done properly can be a cost-effective method of making an item look just the way you want and you look absolutely chic!

12. Have a Style Swap Party. Get a group of friends together where you all bring along your slightly used but still in great condition items: clothing, jewellery, bags, shoes; and swap them with each other. Not only do you have fun but get to go home with some new pieces for your wardrobe.

Did you know that typically we wear 20% of our wardrobe 80% of the time which means 80% of the value of your wardrobe is a waste of money. If you're like me, you will already be doing some of the above but also like me, it's work in progress as we continue to understand more about what we need and why. So be patient - it takes time. The clothes we wear play such an important part in how we want to be seen but it doesn't have to be a burden on the purse strings if you know what you are doing. This would be a good time to break this buying habit and get 100% value.

Any decent Financial Advisor will tell you that looking after your investments is something you should have been doing all along and in my profession. I would certainly advocate the same regarding one key investment, namely you. And in a time when there is so much economic uncertainty with little indication of when it will end - how can you afford not to invest in yourself?

Image Success Story: From Student to Microsoft Guru

Meet Viktor Mendes 22, half Ukrainian half Cuban, who came to the UK from the Ukraine 6 years ago to live. Originally in Bournemouth where he studied for his A levels, it was this continued studying that brought Viktor to Southampton where he obtained his BSc in Psychology at Southampton University. Viktor now lives and works in Southampton as a ‘Microsoft Guru’...yes that is a genuine job title. This is his story of how he came to see me and how image consulting helped him to step up his game, shedding his student image for good.

As a student, most of Viktor’s time would have been spent studying, at lectures with most of his free time being spent going to the pub, playing sports, namely martial arts and basketball and even a bit of break dancing (nice to see that’s making a come back from my day!). Pretty much the expected life of a student and this was reflected in how Viktor dressed…as a student. Clothes were mismatched . Typical attire was made up of jeans, T-shirt (and not always regularly washed) and a pair of trainers. The opposite of what would be deemed stylish.

“It was almost a bad habit to neglect my appearance.”

As a student, living the student life, there can be a strong sense of needing to ‘blend in’. As Viktor says, “everyone else is looking like a schmuk, so why should I bother?!”. However even with that thought, Viktor did find that there were a few occasions when the environment around him were ‘well dressed’ and it was particularly at these times when Viktor felt acutely under-dressed – almost embarrassed by his look.

Viktor is one of those people who are very aware of themselves and, even as a student, had an idea of how he would like to look but lacked the confidence and knowledge to do anything about it. In fact he did attempt to improve his appearance by buying a few items but, for some reason, never felt right in them with no understanding of why.

“I was told by the recruitment consultant to dress to impress!”

All that was about to change as student life would soon be a distant memory as Viktor would be stepping out into the working world with a job with Microsoft as a ‘Microsoft Guru’. The job, essentially the ‘face of Microsoft’ is a very customer facing position to lead Microsoft’s vision of changing the way PC solutions are sold to the general public. This role would not only require being trained to increase skills and knowledge but also a position of authority where he would be responsible for training staff.

But first – the interview process and Viktor was informed by the Recruitment Consultant that this would involve a day long assessment at the Hilton Hotel and was told to dress to impress.

“I recognised the need for change – quite a drastic one!”

From Viktor’s perspective, this was not just about securing a new job, which was the immediate goal, but also an indicator for having the knowledge, skills and self-awareness for moving forward in life. Having a practical approach, his opinion was to gain this knowledge from an expert.

It was a friend that referred Viktor to me and the services of imaginestyle. Driven by a strong need to get this right, a phone call was made to me. After an initial discussion over the phone about what to expect, the benefits and timing, a ‘Styling for Men’ session was booked in the diary. It has to be said though that Viktor was a little skeptical. "Although I had booked, my initial impression of the session was that it was expensive and I had a genuine concern that I hoped Min knew what she was doing!".

“I wasn’t particularly looking forward to spending 3-4 hour listening to fashion talk!”

According to Viktor, just booking and committing to the session was a wake-up call, particularly. As part of the preparation (the ‘homework’ as I like to call it) was to choose a few ‘successes’ and ‘failures’ from his current wardrobe to bring along, which prompted him go through his entire wardrobe and throw most of it out, as he finally listened to his own awareness and realised that he could not longer wear some of it anymore.

The Styling for Men session started with objective setting. For Viktor the main objective was to create a polished and positive self image, being comfortable with his own sense of style and the ability to know how to dress for all occasions: personal and professional. So although Microsoft would provide a uniform for work, it was also about maintaining a well groomed look and essentially discarding the ‘self-neglecting’ habits of old.

Viktor’s session consisted of a Colour Analysis followed by the Style session which covers all aspects of bodyline, proportions and scale as well as grooming and personal style. A total time of around 4 hours. It’s exhausting as there is a lot to take in but the time goes quickly as you're learning, not only the skills but more about yourself and what is important to help you maximise your personal image impact.

“The shopping trip was awesome, really fun and surprisingly easy to see how this new knowledge works. My confidence in shopping has really increased…I mean I wouldn't even have considered asking the shop assistants for help.”

For Viktor it was important to put all this new knowledge into action to help make it ‘real’ so he immediately followed up by booking a 3 hour shopping trip with me at West Quay Shopping Centre in Southampton…well it was booked for 2 hours but we were having so much fun learning how to approach shopping plus we’d saved money on purchases that we continued for another hour.

A few months on, Viktor has finished his training with Microsoft and is now very busy working his new role. His original apprehension of visiting an Image Consultant dispelled as he considers the money certainly well spent. In fact we are planning another shopping expedition as we work through his wardrobe needs - which are also reflected in the many new social situations he finds himself in…no more student pubs, more sophisticated wine bar!

Deciphering Autumn/Winter 2008 trends for the guys

10 quick updates for your wardrobe

My first newsletter had quite a comprehensive update on the Autumn Winter 2008 trends for women and as promised, here is an update for the guys too so here it is – whether the very fashion conscious or the occasional shopper, it’s worth a read for a few ideas of how to update your wardrobe.

As with the trends set for women for Autumn and Winter 2008 and due to the never ending doom and gloom of the economic downturn, there is a sense of seriousness and calmness about what hits the high street for men. Quality and items that will last are important (as they should always be to be honest!) so as always, buy carefully. Having said that, this is fashion and so in traditional catwalk style, the same mood drives a need to escape from reality so included is a sense of the flamboyant.

So what are the key things you need to know - here are 10 quick updates:

1. Purple, purple, purple...it's still in!

Purple is the still colour of the season. Just as different tones of purple are appearing on everything that constitutes clothing for women – the same goes for the men’s collections. Update your wardrobe by looking out for a purple injection as an accent colour in shirts and ties varying from the very autumnal deep shades of purple to the pastel shades. A level of vibrancy is introduced with bright blues which provide a contrast with the more traditional earthy autumnal hues. Grey is also big this season as well as the usual black.

So look out for complete outfits in muted shades of blue and purple – yes top to toe, if you dare!

2. Checks

Just about every men’s high street store will have something in checks – it's everywhere! if there was such thing as a check haircut, it’ll be all the rage too!

Depending on your personal style you can make this look as dramatic or understated as you want by where and on what you wear your checks on. Consider fabrics as everything from wool to cotton will be out there and in many combinations of colours – even the lumberjack red and black.

The main thing here is to be careful with scale here and the size of checks against your own body proportions.

3. The Tuxedo and Evening Suit

Come on guys…you know there’s a James Bond in all of you and even more so now what we have a man's man like Daniel Craig re-igniting the role. And this year you can go traditional or go for some drama. The tuxedo jacket in general is huge this season (and just as much for the women – so guys watch out it doesn’t disappear from your wardrobe!)

4. Suits in general

In my job, more often than not when conducting a session for men, suits will play an important part of the education process and wardrobe. So care must be given when interpreting what fashion trends say and what really suits your personal style, body shape and proportions. But anyway…it allows me to put another pic of Daniel up...

The three-piece suit makes a serious comeback with the high street catching on with the complete look including the waistcoat. For some body shapes this can be very flattering so it’s a welcome return. The look is further enhanced by including coats on the same fabric as the suit. And guys do remember the handkerchief in the breast pocket. For a more modern look omit the tie or swap the waistcoat for a cardigan (sleeved or sleeveless).

Suits are razor sharp in cut with a range of luxurious materials with a sense of romanticism. Beware not to look too much like the Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and tone down the look with jeans, shirts and V-neck sweaters (big this season for that understated but very polished Italian look).

A suit is ideal for anyone and a great dress up – dress down look for men. A good quality and well fitted suit (2 or 3 buttons) can be extremely versatile: team jackets (with or without the waistcoat) with good fitting jeans; or match trousers with a classic shirt and merino wool sweater. Smarten up with shoes and accessories and you on your way to a stylish wardrobe.

5. The pea coat

First of all – what’s a pea coat? Easier with a picture – see this one by Kenneth Cole. You wouldn’t go far wrong if you included this in your wardrobe as they are big this season and even better if you can get one in purple!

Esquire, a few issues ago, did a whole spread on the return of the double breasted jacket. I remember reading in apprehension as this cut really doesn’t suit certain body shapes but yes, they are back in.

6. Pleats and baggy trousers!

There is a definite air of gangster and gangsta! The baggy trouser look is not quite ‘madness’ but actually quite chic if worn well and not too oversized. The pleated trousers (again not something that suits all body shapes) are all over the high street as with different widths of trousers. We see the very narrow – mens skinny to the wide leg of a very 1940s look.

7. It’s Vintage, you know…

What does vintage mean this season? I’ve split into two, there’s the revival of the Harris Tweed, corduroy and leather – inspired perhaps by your Granddads wardrobe but requires updating with a fresh injection of colour, cut and lines – it’s more about the materials that are being used.

The other revival which is either vintage or retro is taken from the 1940s. Watch out for softer colours, wide leg trousers, the hats, handkerchiefs and the polka dots!

8. Not quite going back to school with the Preppy look

We saw this with the ladies and it looks like they are not the only ones going back to school. Think modern school uniform but with sharper cuts, teamed with a sporty and military feel. Include tailored wool jumpers, wool caps and duffle coats with colours in fresh grey and blue.

9. To the manor born with a Country Gentleman

Some classic British aristocratic dressing comes in to bring a great sense of tradition from the catwalk to the high street. Look out for the heavy checks and tweeds to perfect that country gentlemen look. Key to getting this look right is not to dress head to toe in your ‘to the manor born’ outfit but pick key items and ensure good quality and grooming. In addition will be a range of accessories for the gentry look, from wellies to flat caps to braces.

10. Hey – what’s that on your head?

The tradition and etiquette of wearing hats has been a long time coming back into vogue. But at the moment, hats are in with no rules as to what you can wear on your head…even bowlers have been spotted.

Hats do not suit everyone so consider carefully your choice of headgear - if at all. But it's there this season as an accessory to make a statement.

So guys have fun with this seasons trends but remember you do not have to be 'fashionable' to have style. Image tips to maximise your presentation skills

The scene is set: Your about to make your debut, the PowerPoint slides are ready, the lights are on and the audience waits with baited breath. You stride out on stage with confidence but what’s this? The audience starts to smirk, then giggle uncontrollably and then roar out with laughter…at you! And before you’ve even made it to the lectern you look down and realise you are standing there buck naked except for the notes in your now shaky hand. Err…exit, stage right.

You wake up suddenly. Relieved that it's only the classic night before nightmare.

However, if you are about to present, whether to an audience of 5 or 500, it would be prudent to pay just as much attention to your physical appearance as you do to the contents of your presentation. If you want to call it a true success. Below are some of areas to consider to help maximise the impact of your presentation by ensuring you are presenting you well.

You never get a second chance to make a first impression. A statement, never more true than when you are faced with presenting to a group of people, also a scary one when you consider that research shows that 93% of those impressions are formed based on your appearance, body language and tone. So how you dress and present yourself is an important factor of non-verbal communication and should be part of any effective presentation skills program for creating positive rapport with an audience and sending out the right signals.

What does your image say about what you are presenting? Consider carefully the topic of what you are presenting and how your image reflects this? It’s a useful exercise to spend some time thinking about your audience and the topic, in order to visualise the type of attire most appropriate. For example:

Creative/artistic/imaginary could mean more dramatic, striking, expressive wear
Social/amicable/open/friendly means you will want to come across accessible and approachable
Serious/efficient means a polished look to ensure you are taken seriously
Innovative/pioneering/original would require a modern, current, ‘fashionable’ look

If you are not sure what type of dress is appropriate, ask someone who does: your boss, your colleagues and peers or research it. Rather do that and get it right.

Look good, feel confident with your style. It is important that what you are wearing is comfortable. It doesn’t matter whether you are presenting to a small group or in a large auditorium, for that time you are centre stage. Anything uncomfortable, too tight or emphasising your less positive areas will immediately be noticed – taking away attention from what you are presenting.

Clothes should flatter and be in line with body proportions and scale, fit well and allow a sense of personal style appropriate for the topic, audience, event and venue.
For professional business settings always play safe and wear a jacket.
Consider or get expert advice on any figure challenges: male or female, most of these can be managed by directing the eye upwards and not drawing unnecessary attention. For example by buttoning up a good fitting jacket; proper length of trousers, skirts and jackets and avoiding eye-catching accessories or clothing detail.
Bear in mind the use of a clipped on microphone. Clothing will need to account for this and so wear something with a lapel.
Ensure you are not wearing anything that will cause distraction.
Avoid flashy accessories as this will also be distracting.

Importance of colour. Colour is a powerful communicator, evoking a more or less universal set of emotions and reaction so consideration should be given to what colours you should wear. Consider even the surroundings of where you will be presenting so that you are not lost on stage if it turns out the background is the same shade as your outfit!

The colours you choose (as with the style) will be dependent on the environment, audience and that earlier description of the topic, business or company. This will determine whether a more traditional business style is appropriate or something more relaxed or more dramatic.

Ensure the colours that you wear compliment your natural hair and eye colour and skin tone. You will look more refreshed, radiant and natural. Ideally ladies should wear make-up (yes, even a bit of foundation and eyeliner for men can be appropriate) but care should be taken on its application and quality and ensure that it is not over powering.

Have a top-down checklist! Grooming and finishing touches are essential as these will be obvious when in front of an audience. Make sure you try your whole outfit on before hand and check your appearance from head to toe.

Does you hair look well kept? Does it need a cut? Are there any issues that should be addressed? Is it in an appropriate style for a presentation. For example will you fiddle with it if it's worn down? (Personally I was notorious for this!)

Eye contact is important but can be lost if you wear glasses with reflective lenses as lights bounce off these. Go for non-reflective lenses if possible.

What does your profile look like – remember you may be seen from different angles. Keep your pockets clear and make sure you do not have any distracting, hanging or creating unnecessary attention on your clothing.

Check your tights have no ladders and always keep a few spare pairs. Polish your shoes and ensure heels are clean.

Be prepared for the day. Know your environment – Research your venue and ensure you are familiar with its layout. Arrive early – it will help to calm nerves and allow you to adjust to your surroundings. If you are required to travel a long distance then you may want to consider not travelling in your ‘presentation outfit’ or at least ensure you can hang up your jacket or have your clothes pressed.

If you have a long day ahead of you, consider carrying a spare outfit or a spare shirt or blouse.

And finally…are you smiling? One of the greatest communicators. A smile can make all the difference to your mood and the mood and atmosphere of your presentation. It’s true when they say a smile is contagious. No matter what the reason or background as to why you found yourself standing in front of an audience, you might as well make the most of this experience. In the words of William Shakespeare all the worlds a stage so enjoy it!

At the end of the day, your presentation may be brilliant, technically sound and visually pleasing, but looking and sounding the part is key to gaining that immediate and lasting credibility. Your personal presence and impact can have a very positive or negative affect on the way others perceive you. It differentiates you and allows you to stand you out from the crowd.

Goodbye Summer (and good riddance if you ask me since it wasn't much of one but hey...I'm not bitter) and hello Autumn/Winter. For many of us the season changes can be confusing, trying to understand what’s new in fashion, what to invest in for your wardrobe, what suits you, your body shape and your own personal style and what you can afford. In other words, how much of the new seasons ‘must haves’ do you embrace, remembering that you don't have to be a fashion victim to be stylish (...or rob a bank for that matter).

It seems that the impending doom of the economic climate has hit the fashion and style scene and created an air of seriousness for the Autumn/Winter 2008 season with strong emphasis on investment dressing. Music to our ears since this is the basis of what we preach! Items now are intended to be timeless, good quality that can be dressed up or down for the occasion, separates will be key and so a great time to choose clothing wisely.

The Seasons Colours
The Autumn season usually brings with it a range of warmer, somber shades but this year, it's all change with hues of a much brighter, richer, vibrant quality with the usual shades being given a lift with undertones of purple, blues & greens. If you know your Pantone colours then watch out for Blue Iris - Pantone's Colour of the Year for 2008 and Royal Lilac. It's inevitable this season what black dominates but also watch out for vibrant reds, beautiful teal blue, purples and earlier in the season, grey.
Coats have strong structured lines and shapes
Undefined waistlines, A-lined swing style - 60s inspired. Still clinching in the waist with defined waistlines and belted or why not accessorise with your favourite belt.

Dramatic Gothic
Lace, leather, satin sheers are all used to maximum effect to create the Gothic look and of course...black. Heritage & urban sophistication
Out of all the seasons looks, this is my favourite and can again be very easy to introduce into your wardrobe either by one or two staple items or through carefully selected accessories. Like the others, it is a look that can be dressed up or down. Look for country plaids & wools, traditional tartans and checks in this seasons colours. Tweed is big so look out for suits and jackets. This is the era of sophisticated tailoring. A good investment buy is a crisp white shirt (your best white though), which can be teamed with a pair of tailored trousers or this seasons tulip shaped skirts.

Go Big on Accessories
Even though you'll find necklines going higher, that does not mean they are ignored. Lots of layered chains are in this season, wear around the neck and wrist - as many as you dare and can stand! Accessories are big in size this season. We've already mentioned some of the trends in materials and textures and all these extend to accessories from lace to fur to fringing.
Anything that shines
As well as the usual glitz and glitter and sequins that the Autumn/Winter season brings, practically anything shiny goes - that includes patent leather on everything - shoes, bags, coats, belts...you get the picture.

Our final note is a reminder that it with all the new season trends, it is important to be aware of your own personal style, your body shape and proportions and the fact that you don't need to go to the extreme to create the desired look. Remember also to look in your current wardrobe - what's in there that can be adapted. Successful Shopping in the Sales

Is it true that everyone likes a bargain? I suppose the answer is undoubtedly yes but I am not convinced we like trawling through the sales rack, particularly when you couldn’t get to the shops until late in the day only to find half the stock mixed up and on the floor. Or do you come home with lot's of bargains that end up lost in the wardrobe, never to see the light of day again?

Have no fear, here are some of my Top Tips on how to keep sane in the silly sales season and ensure you only make sensible investments.

Typically the bigger sales occur mid-end Summer and after Christmas but these days we are never too far away from sales signs so it is worth knowing how to be an effective and successful shopper to ensure you don’t waste money or your valuable time.

Shop in the morning. I'm not recommending camping out or anything but you will have a far more pleasant experience when you can see the stock without getting down on your hands and knees. You also benefit from it (usually) being quieter. Note: This advice also applies if you are a fan of TKMaxx and Primark - sale or no sale time.
Invest in staple items and avoid the fashion. The sales are the time that stores clear stock in order to make space for the new season so be careful that you don't end up purchasing a lot of high fashion items that are very obviously going out of fashion. This can be a matter of opinion and will be governed by your attitudes to clothing and your own personal style. Nevertheless, this can be a great time to invest in the more costly items that you require in your wardrobe and even from the more costly brands, if the price is right. So look out for suits, jackets, coats, trousers, T-shirts and knitwear.
Invest in your accessories...especially shoes! As you know my favourite subject is shoes and the sales can be a great time to bag a bargain and usually a store will bring out unsold stock or stock of mixed seasons so you really can have your pick. I always like the fact that it's all arranged by shoe size thus allowing you to scan and pick as many as you want. Look out for the bargains out of season, e.g. boots in Summer, you won't regret a good investment when Autumn and Winter kick in. Jewellery, bags, scarves can all be ideal items to hunt around for in the sales, especially if you've had your eye on certain items for a while.
Take a break. Have a well deserved cup of tea and ensure you are fuelled up. It's thirsty work this sale shopping. Perhaps avoid too many champagnes as this could impair the shopping budget - save that treat for when you're done!
Know your wardrobe and stay in control. It takes time but understanding the clothes, lines and colours that best flatter your body shape, lifestyle and personal style form the foundation of how to build your wardrobe. Armed with this knowledge enables you to be aware of what you actually need in your wardrobe and so will better prepare you for what colours, shapes and styles are in the sales. Be controlled in that even though something is a bargain - if it's still going to sit in your wardrobe - it's still a waste of money.
Don't be afraid of online sales shopping. We can't escape the Internet shopping sales and sites have much improved with accurate sizing guides, clearer visuals and more convenient returns procedures. There are so may out there that it probably warrants a blog of its own but if you subscribe to a few favourites you will certainly receive notifications of sales.
Understand the T&C's. I bought a pair of sandals in the Dune sale and was momentarily shocked that there was no return policy on sale items. With most shops there is usually some kind of policy although it can be a lot stricter for sale goods over a reduced period than non-sale items. If you are not sure, ask what the return and refund policies are!
Still try it on! Another reason for going earlier and preferably not on the weekend. Some stores allow up to 6 (or more) items in the changing rooms and so do still invest the time to try it all on. You can make better decisions about whether to buy this way, bargain or not and will keep you in the habit of saying yes or, just as important, no for the right reasons.

What colour should I wear & why?

Good for: Strongest in colour psychology - use to lift your spirits or working with the little humans.

Sophisticated & safe in BLACK
Positives: Elegant, Sophisticated, Mysterious, Dramatic, Efficient, Clarity
Negatives: Menacing, Coldness, Depressing, Boring, Mournful, Indecisive, Serious

Good for: Blending in whether the dress at a cocktail party or business suit - you will not stand out!
Not so good for: Creates protective barriers so avoid when you want to be seen as accessible to people.

Pure & simple in WHITE
Positives: Clarity, Purity, Cleanliness,Simplicity, Innocent, Fresh, Efficient

Good for: Great for stimulating deep thought and concentration - showing off a creative side.

Negatives: Safe, Boring, Conservative, Lack of sophistication, Humourless

Good for: Safe suit colour in the right tone. Can be sophisticated worn with appropriate accessories.

Absorb the energy in ORANGE
Positives: Warmth, Security, Fun, Passion, Youthful, Sensual, Energetic, Hospitable
Negatives: Frivolous, Immature, Undisciplined, Superficial

Good for: Definitely the fun colour - wear for energising you and those around you!
Not so good for: Unless a very creative environment - not good for business.

Think about how you people react towards you, even in the sub-conscious in the different situations you find yourself and make those colour choices with style and suitability.

What do you mean I'm a size 16?!

This amazing weight loss and gain prompted me to write about the confusing variations of clothes sizes for women out there, and how we really should not worry if our dress, bust and butt sizes fluctuates from shop to shop.

In my case it was a rather comical shopping trip for a pair of high-waist blue trousers, one of this seasons ‘must haves’ for achieving the nautical look but I digress. I had seen a pair in M&S, Gap and Oasis which saw me go from a size 14 then to a 12 and then to a size 16 with only a skinny cappuccino in between and much rushing back and forth into changing rooms.

So why is this? And just what size am I then? Well, the bottom line is that there is no standard sizing in the clothing industry. It is all dependent on the original designer, their interpretation of each size and what measurements and proportions the original ‘fit model’ was at the time of the original concept. I’ve done some research into this and while I could elaborate on what little information there actually is out there, the conclusion is the same. Unless the item you want to buy was sampled on a model that has the exact proportions you have, there is a very strong possibility you will need to take more than ‘your size’ into the changing room by the time it hits the High Street.

It becomes more a game of averages, if, on average, we buy size 12s then we tend to pigeon ourselves as size 12 and I guarantee there will be squeals of joy when we fit into a 10 and a depressing sigh when we have to go for a 14.

But is that so bad if at the end of the day we look good, everything fits and has an amazing flattering effect on our figures? The answer is of course not! Although even I was a little shocked when I had to venture for a size 16 in Oasis which still had an odd fit.

So ladies, my top tips for successful size selection:

- Take a size up and down from your usual size into the changing room but always do try before you buy.

- A lot of shops post their measurements online so you can measure yourself before venturing out or Internet shopping.

- Accept the fluctuations in sizing! It is important to remember that with some items, taking the larger size can have a more flattering effect rather than squeezing yourself into ‘your size’.

- If all else fails, do what I do, buy shoes....they never disappoint.

My very quick whistle top shop of the usual suspects of High Street stores and their clothing sizes. For frequent shoppers, this won't be anything new.

Debenhams: Generally sizing is generous but with more designers at Debenhams, I would stick to the advice and try on.
Dorothy Perkins: Almost always bigger with cuts being generous around the waist. In addition, provides different leg lengths for trousers.
Coast: Fairly true to sizing with a good range of sizes.
East: Similar to Coast, size range is good. Some items can be a bit narrow on the hips but otherwise true to size.
Gap: Some of the jeans can stretch quite quickly so bear this in mind as you may want to go for a size smaller! Sizing is American and converts to UK by adding 4 so Gap 6 is a UK 10, a 8 is a 12, a 10 is a 14 etc.
H&M: Can be a inconsistent so try on as blouses can be small. Sizing can be inconsistent with the norm for most European brands and such a huge variety of clothing - be patient, wait in the queue and try it all on!
Hobbs: Generally true to size.
Jane Norman: Cut very small and may only go up to 14.
Karen Millen: Quite true to sizing, especially with coats and jackets. Trousers can be cut narrower.
Mango: European sizing and on the small sizing. Trousers will be cut on the long side...obviously they are very tall in the rest of Europe...this can be a tad frustrating so buy some WonderWeb.
Marks & Spencer: Surprisingly turning into one of my favourites, especially the online Limited Collection. M&S is generous on sizing. Added pluses are shoe sizing that comes in half sizes and different leg lengths.
Matalan: Sizing can be hit and miss so try items on. Generally items run bigger.
Miss Selfridge: Has a tendency for sizing to run smaller and may struggle a little if top heavy.
Morgan: Very similar to Jane Norman – tread cautiously into the changing rooms.
New Look: Generously sized and also have a plus size section which is great. Most of the shoe designs come in half sizes.
Next: Similar to Marks & Spencer, items are generous in size and can even be slightly larger.
Oasis: Certainly varies in sizing from style to style – try before hand as some items can be small around the waist and hips….particularly a certain pair of blue nautical like trousers.
Peacocks: Basically sizes vary. Generally true to size bordering on large.
Phase 8: Quite true to sizing, similar to Monsoon.
Primark: Similar to Peacocks so rule of thumb is to try things on!
Principles: Similar to Monsoon, with true sizing. Provides a petite section.
River Island: Found to cut on the small side so again, try on.
Topshop: Although fairly true to size, there is a tendency to be small.
Warehouse: Generally rue to sizing with some styles cut on the small.
Wallis: Similar to Dorothy Perkins, cut generously.
Monsoon: Generally true to size, bordering on generous. Varying trouser lengths – another plus point.
Whistles: Very much style dependent but actually more true to size.
Zara: Similar to Mango with European sizing. Tends to be cut smaller with a long leg lengths. Can also be smaller across the bust but this depends on designs.

Happy Shopping! Oh and I gave up on all 3 shops for my blue trousers and went for some nice tailored ones from Monsoon, still nautical (ish)…well blue anyway.
